Sexism and racism in science are not "special interest" issues. If people are being made to feel uncomfortable in ANY discipline for no good reason, shouldn't we all be concerned about that? Science is the collection of disciplines that is responsible for medical and technological progress! Shouldn't we want EVERYONE who's smart and motivated enough to participate? Or is it just old white guys who are capable of genius, and the rest of us are disposable help? If we're treated like crap and leave, that's okay, because our ideas were worthless anyway? This is the sentiment that goes unspoken when people dismiss allegations of sexism and racism on their face, but it's there, hanging in the air like a stench. "You're not an innovator anyway."
Bringing more women and minority men into science is better for science than it is for any individual involved! I wish people would stop acting like it's about us gettin' our $$$. It hurts. We love this just as much as you do, if not more, because we have to jump a few more hoops than y'all do. Stop acting like we want you to "water down" science so we can have jobs. Douchebags.
