Vegans of Color on exotification of foods-- one of the many annoying forms of othering.
Science-Wrecking Diversity Mongers! Oh, and FSP has a book out now?! I get paid next week. Boo.
SBPH addresses "reverse racism:"
There is, however, a growing community of white people who are fed up with
white guilt but stop well short of being white supremacists (who have never
subscribed to white guilt). The most interesting thing about this group is that
a growing number of non-whites, particularly asians, are joining their
ranks...This is the community of people who attempt to negate the cascading
effects of hundreds of years of slavery and institutionalized racism by trying
to convince black people (and everyone else) that they also face
‘discrimination’ and have a similar history of oppression...I refer to these
people as Mark 2’s, which is what I’d assume U.S. Marines would call idiots
running around yelling “ME TOO!” when other people discuss racism. The typical Mark 2 will usually cite some trite instance where black (or
white) people made them uncomfortable and compare that to the lingering effects
of several centuries of slavery, Jim Crow, gentrification, modern day
institutionalized racism, and semi-conscious stigmatization that black people
have to deal with EVERY SINGLE MOTHERFUCKING DAY OF THEIR LIVES.
I liked this dude's comment on a Shakesville post about feminist anger:
"My mom was angry - very angry. She cried and cursed and yelled a lot. Not at
me, but just at unfairness of her situation and her inability to get even a
scrap of justice. Had she not expressed her anger, I would never have known how
deeply this affected her. I would never have know[n] how much it hurt her."
Anyone seen Flying? I wanna.
From an American Scientist review of two books on women in science:
... in fact, particular groups of females outscore males in all areas of math. Japanese and Taiwanese girls perform better in math than North American boys; and Singaporean girls beat out everyone else—by a full standard deviation. In light of these findings it is indeed remarkable that the Harvard math department has had on staff not one woman full professor since its founding in 1638. If for a moment we accept Summers's argument that hiring at world-class institutions follows cognitive ability, we might expect Harvard's math department to include at least one Singaporean, Japanese or Taiwanese woman among its tenured faculty.

You know, I used to loooooove science. I actually wanted to major in marine biology until I was 15 or so. But, you know, girls don't do science (pffffffffft). I often wonder if I'd be happier if I'd pursued that course, but I like what I do now, too.
Interesting article on the "exotic/ethnic" thing. I've personally come to be bothered by describing people as "ethnic." I'm not entirely sure why, but I think it has something to do with the fact that, since we all have an ethnicity, wouldn't we all be ethnic?
Mrar. I hate 8am classes. But I've got some rockin' German cabaret-punk on my iPod to terrify people in the library with, so I'm good. I loves you, oh Indian Delite.
I'm lucky in that no one has ever opposed my educational/career goals. I've never heard a person described as "ethnic," but I do hear that about food/clothing/music all the time, and it annoys me because it's meaningless without some qualification.
